Nthn beaches of Asturia & Galicia & Santiago de Compostela –3 to 5 October

Left the Picos in more fog & headed NW to Ribadesella where the Sella River enters the Nth Atlantic Ocean. A lovely beach & fishing village. Then headed west & took a turn down a small side road towards the beach & found an amazing little spot near Vega where the Vega River cut through some large rock formations – very impressive! Then on to Llastres, another quaint beachside town & finally to Cudillero –also a quaint fishing, beach & holiday town. We entered town via a steep narrow winding road between the buildings & mountains rising steeply on both sides – felt like we were driving into a deep chasm – then suddenly we came to the town plaza right on the waterfront. The town rises steeply from the water behind the plaza, the houses appearing to hang from the cliffs. An amazing setting for a seafood dinner!

After a big & beautiful breaky in Cudillero we headed east along the coast to Ferrol then south to Santiago de Compostela – a pleasant drive with views of the sea, small & large towns, plantation (eucalypts) & natural forests & beautiful green pastures. Some surprisingly large towns – Ribadio (10k), Viveiro (15k), Ferrol (68k) – they just looked like dots on the map?

Took a while to find our B&B (the GPS had no idea) which is in a tiny narrow street in the small community of Costoia with grape vines all around – very quaint.

A taxi into Santiago with first stop the Cathedral  - the finishing point for most of those on the Camino de Compostela pilgrimage. Luckily we arrived early & beat the queues which were huge later on. Yet another amazing Cathedral with extravagant decorations inside (the outside has a lot of scaffolding as they are doing massive restoration work). Then to the museum of the Pilgrimage & Santiago – a modern building inside - which provided a great history of both the pilgrimage &the city (& it was free for oldies!) Spent the rest of the day wandering the streets in the old part of town & eating! Bought prawns & scallops at the market then took them to the nearby restaurant to be cooked for us – fresh & delicious. Then had the local speciality – Galician octopus. Another tough day.
